One time on the subway train in Chicago, me and two friends of East Asian origin were coming back from a dinner at Chinatown. When we sat down, next to this African American man, he immediately commented really loudly while holding his nose: “Damn, you guys smell like fried rice.” One of my friend immediately got mad and replied: “you got a problem with that?”. There was a silence for about 5 seconds until my other friend looked at me started laughing, and then the stranger started chuckling as well , and then we all laughed.
在北美工作和生活超過10年的東洲後裔,我意識到美國的多元文化實際上是一個沙拉碗,而不是一個大熔爐。來自不同種族的人通常根據某些定型觀念(例如所吃的食物)進行分類和定義。一次在芝加哥,我和兩個來自東亞的朋友在唐人街吃了晚飯回來準備搭地鐵。當我們在這個非洲裔的美國人旁邊坐下時,他立即大聲地捏著鼻子說:“他媽的,你們聞起來真像炒飯。”我的一個朋友立即生氣並反駁說:“干你屁事”,而我的另一個朋友則哈哈大笑。幾年後,當我嘗試製作自畫像時,這種遭遇感動了我。我開始思考人們如何通過飲食來定義自己,而炒飯實際上是對我最準確的描述,因為我就是半亞洲半美洲的人。在這作品裡,我把我工作室和家中發現的許多不同物品(例如項鍊和照片)燃燒後拼貼到自製的假米飯中,就好像我的一生被扔進了一個大鐵鍋中快炒一樣。
